Apps

The 25 built-in apps of the laptop OS, what each one does, and how to disable or gate them.

The laptop ships with 25 apps. Each opens in its own OS window and can be dragged, snapped, minimized, and moved between displays. Third-party resources can add further apps at runtime; those are covered by the SDK.

Any player can get 22 of them. A new account has 13 preinstalled, 8 more install from the NX Store, and the Darknet installs from a site players have to find in the browser. The other three depend on the player's job or role: the MDT for agency jobs, the Newsroom for news jobs, and the Console for admins.

Controlling the lineup

Three levers in config.lua shape what players see:

  • Config.Apps.Disabled hides a built-in app everywhere (desktop, Start menu, taskbar, search) and refuses to open it. Common picks are 'casino' and 'darknet'.
  • Config.Apps.Store.NotPreinstalled lists apps that start uninstalled. Players add them per account from the NX Store app.
  • Config.Apps.Store.InstallerSites hides an app from the store and serves its installer from a browser site instead. By default the Darknet installer is found on a site players have to discover, not in the store listing.

See Configuration for the full option reference.

Money

  • Banking. Deposit, withdraw, transfer to any @handle, request payments, and set up standing payments. The money backend is selectable; see the banking backend section.
  • Finance. A money dashboard: daily cashflow (income against expense) and a composition view of cash, bank, and asset holdings, built from the transaction ledger.
  • Markets. Stock and crypto trading in one tabbed app: live prices, market, limit and stop orders, price alerts, a holdings view with performance, and a crypto wallet for sending coins to other players. Trade fees, slippage protection, and polling cadence are configurable under Config.Exchange.

Work and mobility

  • Jobs. Job openings with per-job application questions. Bosses review applications in the app; each decision emails the applicant. A Seekers tab lists players looking for work. Openings come from Config.JobsHub.Jobs and from postings published on player-built sites.

  • Vehicles. A marketplace for player-owned vehicles: list, browse, buy, and make offers. Reads your framework's vehicle ownership table; fees and price bounds are configurable under Config.VehicleMarket.

  • MDT. An agency records terminal for police-style jobs: cases, parties and timelines, evidence with custody chains, warrants, permits, shifts, a tactical map, bodycam clips, and an audit trail. It opens only for players whose framework job maps to an agency in Config.MDT.Agencies. Add mdt to Config.Apps.Disabled to hide it.

  • Newsroom. The city's news desk. Reporters write stories with pictures in categories, save drafts, and publish them to the front page. Editors can edit anyone's story and publish Breaking news, which every online player gets as a notification. It opens only for the jobs in Config.Newsroom.Jobs. With nx_phone running, the same stories appear in its Bulletin app.

Underground and play

  • Darknet. An alias-based black market behind an access item: a curated catalog with timed courier deliveries, player-to-player listings, seller ratings, and purchasable data files that land in the buyer's Downloads. Payments can charge the buyer's crypto wallet at the live exchange rate (Config.Darknet.PayInCrypto). Server owners can add their own data files without touching script files.
  • Casino. Blackjack, Hi-Lo, video poker, and roulette. Every bet and payout settles server-side; bet sizes, paytables, house edge, and a payout ceiling are configurable under Config.Casino.

Communication

  • Messages. Direct messages addressed by @handle, with reactions, attachments, and typing indicators. Conversations update live while the laptop is open.
  • Email. An in-world inbox with attachments, forwarding, and a signature. Every account has an address on your server's own domain (Config.Mail). Other resources can deliver system mail into it through the sendSystemEmail export (see Exports).
  • Meetings. Video calls between laptops. Start a meeting, share its code, and others join with it. Every character shows on camera, and one person at a time can share their screen. Voice runs through pma-voice when your server uses it. Limits are under Config.Meetings.
  • Contacts. A contact book with blocking. Blocked users cannot message you.
  • Forums. Public boards with posts, comments, and likes. Players can delete their own posts.

Web

  • Browser. A curated in-game internet of .lc sites backed by real server state: a business directory, classifieds, job listings, a live newspaper assembled from actual city activity, weather, and more. Bosses build and publish a public company site with the built-in Website Builder at manage.lc, addressable by a custom slug such as lscustoms.lc. Third-party resources can register their own .lc sites; see Directory sites.

Utilities and system

  • Notepad. Quick text notes, stored per account.
  • Docs. A word processor with signatures and Export to PDF, which saves a PDF file to the player's Documents (Config.Media.AllowPdf).
  • File Explorer. A per-account virtual filesystem with folders, Downloads, and a Recycle Bin. Purchased data files and saved attachments land here.
  • Terminal. A command line with utilities (calculator, system info, per-command help) and network flavor commands that seed a small discovery trail for attentive players.
  • Calculator. A calculator.
  • Map. A city map with the bundled Atlas style, optional Satellite and Grid styles via Config.MapTileCDN, and a locate action.
  • Photos. The account's picture library: uploads, screen snips, and shots taken with the in-world camera item all sync here.
  • Settings. Per-player locale, accent color, wallpaper, and notification preferences, stored per account.
  • NX Store. Installs the optional apps listed in Config.Apps.Store.NotPreinstalled on a per-account basis.
  • Console. The admin app, visible only to holders of the nx_computer.admin ACE: device management, remote PIN reset, wipe and lock, policy overrides, and the audit log. See Security.
